The Backyard Master Plan: How to Phase a Big Outdoor Project
You do not have to build everything at once. You do have to plan everything at once. Here is how smart phasing saves Central Ohio homeowners real money.

The most expensive sentence in outdoor construction is "we'll figure that out later."
We regularly meet homeowners who built a beautiful patio three years ago and now want an outdoor kitchen, except the gas line should have gone under the patio, the grade is wrong for the roof they want, and the electrical panel has no spare capacity. Later has arrived, and it brought a demolition budget.
Plan everything, build in phases
A backyard master plan is a single design for the finished yard: structures, surfaces, utilities, drainage, lighting, and planting beds, even if construction happens over three or four years. It costs a fraction of any single phase and pays for itself the first time a conduit is already where it needs to be.
What a good master plan locks down
- Utility routing. Gas, water, electric, and drain lines get sized and sleeved under hardscape in phase one, even if the kitchen is phase three.
- Grades and drainage. Every later structure has its pad elevation decided now, so water always has somewhere to go.
- Access. Excavators need a path. Build the far corner of the yard before the gate-blocking fence goes in.
- Style decisions. Stone, metal finishes, and rooflines chosen once, so phase three matches phase one instead of reading as an addition.
A typical Central Ohio sequence
- Phase 1: earthwork, drainage, patio, and sleeves. The unglamorous foundation everything else sits on.
- Phase 2: shade and structure. Pergola or pavilion, lighting, ceiling fans.
- Phase 3: the showpieces. Outdoor kitchen, fire feature, or the pool house.
Phasing also spreads the investment into seasonal windows, and it lets you live in the space before finalizing later phases. Almost every client adjusts something after a summer of actual use, and a master plan makes those adjustments cheap instead of structural.
