Pergola Ideas for Dublin and Upper Arlington Backyards
The neighborhoods northwest of Columbus have distinct architecture, and the best pergolas play off it. Ideas we keep coming back to in Dublin and UA.

We build a lot of pergolas northwest of the city, and the projects that look inevitable, like they were always part of the house, share a few moves worth stealing.
Match the architecture, not the catalog
Dublin and Upper Arlington run heavily to brick traditional, transitional, and a growing wave of modern farmhouse. A pergola is an architectural extension of the house, so:
- Brick traditional homes carry substantial cedar beams, chamfered ends, and stained finishes beautifully. Thin aluminum kits look lost against all that masonry.
- Modern farmhouse loves painted or powder-coated black steel with clean square profiles, especially over a bluestone patio.
- Transitional homes are the sweet spot for hybrid builds: steel frame for strength and slim profiles, cedar slats overhead for warmth.
The ideas that earn their keep
- Louvered roofs. Motorized louvers that close against rain have gone from novelty to our most requested upgrade. You get shade in July and a dry dinner party in a surprise storm.
- Integrated lighting from day one. Dimmable downlights in the beams plus a fan-rated center box. Wiring during the build is trivial; retrofitting is not.
- Privacy screens on one side. A slatted wall section turns a pergola into an outdoor room and politely edits the view of a neighbor's trampoline.
- Anchored to real footings. Wind load on a pergola is significant. Ours go on concrete piers below frost depth, never deck blocks.
Size it like a room
The most common mistake is building too small. A dining pergola needs roughly the footprint of your dining room to feel right once chairs pull out. We mock up the footprint with paint on the patio at the design visit; clients are consistently surprised by what the space actually needs.
Curious what structure plus install actually costs? Our pergola cost guide breaks down the ranges by material and feature set.
