5 Outdoor Living Trends We're Building in Columbus in 2026
Forget the national trend lists. These are the five things Central Ohio homeowners are actually asking us to build this year, and why they stick.
Trend articles are usually written from a beach in California. This list is different: it is what Central Ohio homeowners are actually signing contracts for this year, drawn from our own consultation calendar.
1. The pool house as a second living room
The ask has shifted from "somewhere to change" to a genuine four-season room: heated, cooled, TV on the wall, bar fridge humming. Families tell us they use the pool house more in October than July. Budget-wise this is the big leap, and we broke down the numbers in our pool house cost guide.
2. Louvered, motorized shade
Adjustable-louver pergolas keep showing up in our quotes because they solve the Ohio problem: you genuinely need both full sun in May and rain cover in June. Closed, they shed water; open, the patio breathes.
3. Outdoor kitchens designed for winter
Not used in winter, designed for it: frost-depth footings, drainable lines, appliances that do not have to be hauled inside. Grilling season here is twelve months for the committed. Materials matter most, and we covered what survives.
4. Fire as the anchor, screens as the walls
The fire pit conversation has matured into fire as the organizing principle of a seating room, with slatted privacy screens defining edges. Gas fire tables for the convenience crowd, wood-burning for the purists; we build both and have opinions on each, captured in fire pit versus fireplace.
5. Phase-one thinking
The smartest trend costs the least: homeowners arriving with a five-year vision and asking us to master-plan it so each year's project builds toward the whole. Utilities sleeved under this year's patio for a kitchen two summers out. We wrote up how that works in the backyard master plan.
What all five share: they treat the backyard as livable square footage, not landscaping. On a per-square-foot basis it remains the most affordable room you can add to a Columbus home.
